SKILLS

As a full-service ecological consultancy, AEC strives to provide high quality client service across a diverse array of work areas.  AEC operates an ISO9001-equivalent Quality Management System.

The AEC team includes fluent English-, Cantonese- and Mandarin-speakers equipped to meet client needs in the field, in the laboratory and in the business environment.  Whether providing expert witness testimony on ecology at Environmental Impact Assessment hearings, collecting and processing flora and fauna specimens, or conducting high-tech computerised GIS mapping of study areas, AEC staff are skilled, efficient and client-focused.

The invaluable combination of ecological expertise with a firm grasp of the imperatives of business in the East Asia region enables AEC to devise effective study methodologies, create manageable solutions to client problems and place ecological considerations in a meaningful local and international context.  Working in partnership with clients, AEC seeks to provide clear and comprehensive ecological information so clients can make the best business decisions.

IN-HOUSE SKILLS
In-house skills available from AEC include specialised and highly technical techniques such as attaching and monitoring radio- and satellite-tracking devices for birds and mammals, bird-trapping (using mist nets, clap nets, rocket- or cannon-nets), blood and faecal sample extraction, and use of camera traps. Botanical surveys, water quality testing, core sampling, hydrological management, wildlife management, veterinary support and other key skills are available through a carefully selected network of consultants who work closely (and often exclusively) with AEC.

FIELDWORK
Fieldwork lies at the heart of all ecology and, in that spirit, AEC is proud to place extensive field experience at the heart of its work. Everyone in the AEC team, including senior management, genuinely loves working in the natural world. Unlike most ecological consultancies, AEC’s directors regularly ― and literally ― get their hands dirty in pursuit of effective ecological solutions for clients. At their level alone, AEC offers over 60 years’ worth of hands-on, practical field experience of the flora and fauna of Hong Kong and East Asia.

REGIONAL EXPERIENCE
AEC’s experienced ecologists have conducted more than 30 field surveys and ecological study trips in mainland China (from Guangdong to Hebei and Yunnan to Xinjiang). This work has involved studies of birds, terrestrial and marine mammals, herpetofauna, butterflies, dragonflies and other terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. Ecosystems covered include wetlands, forests and shrubland. AEC staff members have also conducted extensive ornithological and entomological investigations throughout South and East Asia.
